The 3 Most Common Mistakes Javelin Throwers Make
And HOW to AVOID them!
Mistake Number 1 – Doing everything at ONCE!
Many throwers are very eager to get stuck in and THROW, THROW, THROW. However, the Javelin throw
is a very technical event. Throwing the javelin involves an attempt to coordinate many movements and
body parts. You cannot look at the throw as a whole, if you do, you will become overwhelmed. Your
training will lose effectiveness and you will lose focus. You have to break it down into its small
component parts.
REMEMBER: It’s the little things that make the good throw great!
Mistake Number 2 – Training BACKWARDS!
Many throwers approach training thinking: “right, I have to start with the run-up” because that is how
we throw. If this is you, however, you are a far distance from the correct starting point. You have to start
at the END of the throw! Why do I say this? Well, the point of release is the most important part in the
javelin throw. If you cannot get this correct from the start there is no chance of you getting it right
running hell for leather towards the throw line in a full throw! You need to learn to work your way back
through the small component parts of the entire throw.
Mistake Number 3 - Building the WRONG type of Muscle!
Many throwers believe that they need to be in the GYM pumping iron to build strong upper body
muscles. Often, however, they engage in heavy, slow repetitions. But this builds SLOW muscles! In an
event that requires zip and speed through the arm and shoulder, this is the WRONG type of muscle. You
need to learn how to develop fast muscle in the right place. This will help you avoid wasting hours and
hours of training time which, if done incorrectly, will stunt your development as a Javelin thrower.
